QUESTION: WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE FROM THE TEXAS INSTRUMENTS NSPIRE CX AND CX CAS

• The CAS has what's known as the 'Computational Algebra System', which allows you to enter in an equation and manipulate it to isolate and solve for any variable in the equation. This is an extremely handy feature for science classes such as chemistry or physics, as it can let you focus on the theory behind the equations you're using without getting hung up on the math (especially if, like me, you haven't practiced the math for years).

• CAS stands for Computer Algebra System. Basically with the CAS, you have what is jokingly referred to as 'pretty print' by some high schoolers/college students. Normally with the TI-83 and the TI-84 (before the upgraded OS) and the TI-89 or the Nspire (non-CAS), in order to use some features you would need to learn a little bit of programing (for example to find the integral of a function you would need to input fnint({funtion},{variable},{lower bound},{upper bound}) ). With a CAS calculator (or the 84 with the new OS), as soon as you tell the calculator you want to take the integral, printed on the screen is the way you would write out the integral with pencil and paper with dotted boxes for you to fill the information for your problem. In summary CAS on a calculator allows you to input problems that us e some sort of process to solve much easier and helps eliminate some human error when typing in the problem. If you are buying this for a class, ask your teacher which model they would recommend for the class as some teachers rather you have the CAS and others don't want you to have the CAS since with it one can technically 'cheat' on a test.

• The CX is a programmable, graphing calculator. The CX CAS is designed to put your problems in algebraically. The CX CAS can also solve equations symbolically, including Calculus equations. The CX CAS is mainly targeted at students attending college, taking math, engineering, and science as well as professionals in these areas.

• You can use the cx on standardized tests like the ACT-SAT. You can't use the CAS because it will take algebraic input and give a non decimal answer.

• For my part, the TI nspire CX CAS is the tops for any and all advanced math problem solving. You have the ability to 'program' it to do almost any math problem imaginable if that solution is not already in a downloadable pack. There are a lot of good tutorials and examples as well as math packs that can be loaded. The ability to connect it to your computer and generate your math solutions and then download it to the device is great. Hope this helps.

• I've only had ti-84 plus silver edition and nspire cx cas. You dont really need cx version but it looks better and gives you a better visual when comparing multiple graphs. CAS means that you might be very unlikely to have your calculator used during test because the CAS solves equations and expressions for you. The Nspire requires you to practice using buttons and shortcuts to learn how to best use the calculator. I like the nspire cx cas though and I mostly planned to use it for checking my homework very quickly. Also, i was the only one in my class with the calculator and everyone liked the screen. I have one and would sell it for 100$ but for some reason i have to have a credit card -.- I got it for like 115 to 120$ from... syracruscaclulus or some third party seller. oh and yeah, there are programs that could be amazing at ticalc.org .. i think that's the website. its bit hard to understand how to navigate the website but it just has links that works like folders within folders... Also, to get good screen shots , you need to update both the calculator software and the windows ti nspire application tool.

• If you already have an 84 and don't plan on going onto Calculus/Physics then you don't need it. If you don't have an 84 or you plan on going on to Calculus/Physics then this calculator will be a big help in checking your work as it can perform a lot of advanced operations that the 83/84 family can't do. However some teachers may require it as there is a lot of neat software/hardware that they can use with it in the classroom. If you are looking to buy it to use for a class, contact the teacher and find out if they plan on using anything that will need an Nspire.

• Personally I have not had to use the software. I played with it and you can use the cas feature on your PC. Documents can be saved. Yet I've had no need to utilize it.

• The PC software is not necessary. It is basically an emulator that allows you to use your computer in place of the calculator. It also allows you to upload and download files pictures and software to and from you Nspire. It is not free like the software for the TI-84 though. There is however a freeware program called TiLP that allows you to do the utilitarian things with your Nspire but without the emulator part.

• No, it's actually easier than the TI-83/84. And there are hundreds of YouTube videos that can assist with programming and learning complex equations and graphing functions. However, I would check with the teacher first to ensure they will allow the use of this calculator.

• I would think that a TI-84 would be better for a middle school. This has all sorts of features that won't be used at that level. On the other hand, the graphics are far superior. You might consider the non-CAS Nspire.

• Depending on the subject matter that they are learning and if it is required in class, I would recommend this calculator for courses above Trig due to the graphing function and CAS functionality. I purchased this calculator for Calc 3 and Differential Equations because of the graphing functionality, 3D Graphing and slope fields, for all other courses I just used a scientific calculator.

• My son took his SAT in 7th grade & had to use a different calculator. That was a couple of years ago. This is now an approved SAT calc. • An nspire can do everything the TI-89 can (and better), and a lot of specific programs often bundled with the 89 have been ported to it. If you have an nspire definitely do not buy an 89!

• It's pretty much a 2014 computer compared to a 1999 computer - it's a million times better

• I say it is like a 5 level up grade to a TI 89. Make sure your teacher doesn't have an issue with the Computer Algebra System. If they do then don't the one with CAS. I have CAS and it does all of the work for you. I also have a TI 83. I started out with a TI 84. I LOVE my NSpire.

• Mmm not sure I understand the implied question you are asking. CAS is the Computer Algebra System built into the chipset / processing power, so it's a 'hardwired feature'. It cannot be 'turned off' or 'disabled' since is what makes this model what it is. The CAS is what processes algebraic expressions, otherwise it would just be a numeric graphing calculator. The CAS is designed for calculus, differential equations, chemistry (some), algebra courses that require the processing power. If you need something for SAT exams or alike that is actually allowed, look into the Nspire or Nspire CX version only (versus NSpire or Nspire CX CAS). Hope this is of any help.

• I looked on all of the documentation that I received and could not find anything listing the warranty. However I did find that if there were questions that the e-mail address ti-cares@ti.com was listed. On another card it listed the phone number 1-800-842-2737 (1-800-TI-CARES) was listed and a link education.ti.com/support was also listed. I did call their phone number once and the person on the other end was very helpful. One consideration you may have though if you're going to use the desktop software but need the calculator for tests is that the resulting lack of familiarity and muscle memory with the calculator layout will make your calculator use slower.

• Haven't used the HP. The Nspire cx CAS is very nice. I have no complaints. The user interface is simple enough to use for quick computation and capable enough to do a lot more. I have the TI Software but haven't tried to write my own programs yet, but this software will make it quite nice should I need to. I'm guessing you'll be working with complex numbers, matrices, linear algebra stuff and the Nspire is a champ for all of those and more. By the way, make sure you get the CAS version.

• I only used a Casio once, and that was 'similar' to the TI-81. Personally I believe that the operating systems installed to the TI calculators are better hands down.
